TENOR BOSTON 2023 welcomes proposals from composers, performers, improvisers, and sound/media artists for the performance of works incorporating technology-based approaches to notation. Concerts will take place at the Longy School of Music of Bard College’s Edward Pickman Hall and the New England Conservatory’s Plimpton Shattuck Black Box Theater. While any works including technology as a core component of a given notational system may be submitted, we are particularly excited to welcome proposals for performances exploring one or more of the following areas:

  • Responsive performance-notation feedback systems
  • Use of supporting memory aids (visuals, ‘external’ sounds, vibrations, etc.) in music or other performance-based environments that may not, otherwise, rely on notation
  • Evolving notations informed by real-time data retrieval (e.g., APIs, sensor-based data streams, signal analysis)
  • Tactile scoring and auto-transcription techniques for individuals with disabilities
  • Notational techniques utilizing machine learning and AI

Note: TENOR BOSTON 2023 has licensed the EasyChair conference platform to help us implement our event. Everyone submitting must create a login and password with EasyChair to submit to the conference. Everyone who is making a submission is considered an “author,” (whether or not you are submitting a paper, work, performance, demo, or workshop). All submissions also require a “title” and an “abstract”. For Works and Performances submissions, please use the “abstract” field as the space to describe your proposed works and performances.

Number of proposed works

Each applicant may submit up to two (2) works for consideration.

Duration

The suggested maximum duration of proposed works is twelve minutes. Brief performances are also very much welcome. Due to available program space, and out of a desire to include a diversity of artistic approaches, we are unable to accommodate performances exceeding twelve minutes in length.

Description / Tech Requirements

All works and performances submissions should include a brief (1-2 paragraphs) description of the proposed performance, a program note, a 100-word biography, and any specific technical requirements for the realization of the proposed work). Please supply scores for performance works where applicable.

Performer requirements

Please state the number and type of performers required for the realization of the proposed work and whether you intend to provide the performers yourself, or to draw on the resources of ensembles-in-residence at TENOR 2023. The number of works selected for performance by in-residence musicians will be limited.

TENOR BOSTON 2023 is proud to invite new works for Loadbang  who have been called a “formidable new-music force” by TimeOutNY.  The ensemble consists of trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet, and baritone voice; works written for the complete instrumentation are encouraged.

TENOR BOSTON 2023 is also excited to invite new works featuring Lisa Mezzacappa, a San Francisco Bay Area-based bassist called “one of the most imaginative figures on the Bay Area creative jazz scene” by The Mercury News. New works featuring upright bass in various contexts are encouraged.
