SPECIAL INSTALLATION

Meju, by Jaegone Kim
Located in front of the Blackbox Theater entrance at New England Conservatory
One of my interests lies in the reinvention of familiar objects or concepts, thereby creating new meanings. Being intrigued by the field of chemistry since my childhood, I enjoy deconstructing elements into their fundamental components and reconstructing them in innovative ways. Meju, my latest project, celebrates the historical use of paper for creating scores. Most of the materials used for Meju were obtained from discarded items in the NEC library. During my creative process, I was captivated by the granular surface of the paper, which facilitated the ink’s adhesion in a unique way for each material. The presentation of my artwork mimics the storage of Meju, a fermented soybean brick, in Korean cuisine.
